Mompreneurs on the Rise: The Crucial Role of Childcare Support

Childcare support is crucial for women entrepreneurs for several reasons:

The buzzword in today’s landscape is the word, “Care”. COVID-19 and work from home restrictions gave everyone a reality check in recognizing the weightage and value of care work as parents and family members had to find it out the hard way – by having to care for their children at home, and occupying their days with activities to maintain engagement and their development while working, replying to emails and being in online meetings and calls.

As restrictions to working has changed since the days of COVID-19, we are left with the recognition, but not the adaptation and accommodation of this new realisation that Care Work, is real, valuable work. To remind everyone the value of care work, here are some of the reasons behind its importance:

  1. Achieving Balance: It is important that childcare is in place to allow for an effective childcare support system. Having this in place allows women entrepreneurs to balance their business responsibilities with family duties – and one is especially the ‘mum guilt’. A Forbes article sheds light on the mum guilt that mothers must also balance. Thus, making good quality childcare important. Without a doubt, this affects a mother’s mental and emotional well-being, which directly impacts business performance and personal health.

  2. Productivity impact: Without a doubt, there is a direct correlation between having a good childcare support in place and maintaining women entrepreneurs’ productivity levels. With a childcare support system that is reliable and one that mothers can depend on confidently, they are able to focus and shift their energy on developing their business, and careers.  Thus, a higher productivity and efficiency in managing their business.

  3. Equal Opportunities for both men and women: Providing childcare support allows both women and men equal opportunities in accessing economic empowerment. The gender norm of women being at home to take care of children and the home is a rejected, and old-fashioned understanding in the dividing of chores in a household. With this adequate childcare support provided to women, they can dedicate their time in developing their understanding, skills, and career as an entrepreneur by participating in networking events, training sessions, and other professional development opportunities.

While these three points can identify and showcase some of the many issues that exist with women entrepreneurs, the issues remain where good, and affordable childcare is crucial to women entrepreneurs. In Malaysia, women entrepreneurs themselves have led the way in providing solutions to the issue of childcare. One solution is Kiddocare, where mobile nannies have allowed the ease of having someone attend to children while the mother is occupied with work. It is dubbed the ‘Uber’ of Babysitting, and has provided the ease that mothers look for – especially during the pandemic.
